Pedale Como Marina

The NGO Pedale Como Marina was created and is managed by Marina Harkot’s parents to fight for traffic safety and justice for cyclists and families who have lost someone in a traffic accident. Marina was a sociologist and cycloactivist who researched the relations between urban mobility and gender. In November 2020, she was run over by a car when she was cycling back home. This site was created for the occasion of the second anniversary of her death, intending to bring light to the bureaucracy involved in a car accident trial and to educate families and society about the details that prevent most irresponsible drivers from being properly punished for their crimes. And it was also a way to honor the deceased in an online memorial.

The branding and logo were created right after her death by some close friends and the project started right away in an Instagram profile https://www.instagram.com/pedalecomomarina/. At that time, I offered any help they needed through my IT knowledge. One year and a half later, their parents contacted me, asking for help to take their initiative to a new level.

Together, we decided on some actions to reach more people and enlarge the audience. And a website was crucial to move forward. So I took the branding/logo as guidance and created a design based on the Twenty Twenty theme layout and implemented all the sections we agreed we needed:

  • Online Memorial
  • Events
  • Contact Form
  • Collaboration Section
  • Impunity Observatory

This Marina Harkot Memorial was implemented with a CPT with ACF fields and a mansory layout created from scratch with pure CSS (a flex box on a horizontal flow). TheĀ Events section is also powered by a CPT with some custom fields like event date and a YouTube link for live streaming. And all the forms were made with WPForms from Awesome Motive, the company I was working on as a Development Team Lead.

There are many possibilities to improve both the site and the project and we are looking forward to expanding it. But, as it is a non-profit organization run in our free time, unfortunately, we can’t dedicate too much effort to make it grow.
